The Yankee Settler’s Cottage, also known as the Isham Day House, is a historic house located at 11312 N. Cedarburg Rd. in Mequon, Wisconsin. It was built in 1839 by Isham Day, one of the first Yankee settlers who came to the area from New York state.
The house is a rare example of a half-timbered construction, with a stone foundation and a wood frame. The house has a side-gabled roof, a central chimney, and a front porch. The house was restored by the Mequon Historical Society and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
The Yankee Settler’s Cottage reflects the history and culture of the early settlers who came to Mequon in the 1830s. They found a densely forested land, with a fast-flowing river and a winding trail. They cleared the land, built farms and mills, and established communities.
They were followed by German immigrants, who brought their own traditions and customs. Mequon became a diverse and prosperous town, with a rich heritage that can be seen in its historic buildings and landmarks.
