Buildwas Abbey is a historic site in Shropshire, England, that was once a Cistercian monastery founded in 1135 by Roger de Clinton, the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. The abbey was known for its discipline, learning, and wealth, and had several daughter houses in Ireland and Wales. It was also a centre of pilgrimage and a place of burial for some notable figures, such as Robert Burnell, the first bishop of Worcester.

The abbey was dissolved in 1536 by Henry VIII as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Today, you can visit the impressive ruins of the abbey church and the monks’ quarters, which are among some of the best preserved 12th century examples of a Cistercian church. You can also see the beautiful vaulted and tile-floored chapter house with its amazing intact tiled floor and decorative stonework. The abbey is situated in a wooded Severn-side setting, not far from the Iron Bridge and Wenlock Priory.
